A career in Marketing can be extremely stimulating in any industry and while not specific to the maritime industry, there are many roles available for marketing executives in shipping companies and agencies that have shipping business accounts.
The everyday work of a marketing executive is often varied and can include advertising, promotion, public/media relations, product development, sponsorship and research. Marketing executives will also need to liaise and build relationships with a range of people, including customers, suppliers and colleagues, and often are required to contribute to long-term marketing strategies and successfully manage budgets.
Of course, the responsibilities of the role will vary widely depending on the size of the shipping company and whether the focus is on selling a product or service, such as port consultancy or conferences, or raising awareness of an issue that affects the public. And while a degree in Marketing or Business Studies is desirable for marketing executives, often a passion for marketing and an enthusiasm to learn will open doors.
