Customs Officer

Customs Officers are the shipping industry’s enforcers; they make sure that the legal movement of goods around the world continues, all the while blocking the path of contraband goods.

This demanding job can see customs officers boarding and searching carriers from foreign ports, undertaking inspections and searches to confirm the nature of cargoes, and may even go so far as to conduct body searches of and interviews with crew members if suspicions of violations are aroused.

A customs officer will report on his/her findings, transactions, violations, and discrepancies and has the power to seize contraband and undeclared merchandise and detain or arrest those involved in violations. There are no specific qualifications needed for the role, but customs officers will need to have a good understanding of local, national and international legislation and regulation.
