Shipping Rules

No industry can safely operate outside of the long arm of the law and the maritime industry is no exception.

There are numerous national, regional and international rules and regulations imposed on ship owners and operators to ensure that their operations are carried out in a safe and secure manner. These range from dictating the intervals between inspections of the structure of the ship and specifying what should be done with ship waste to the contents of marine fuel and how to deal with a ship in distress.

This section will describe the interface between the maritime industry and governments, and will describe the activities of national and international shipping bodies and organisations, explaining what part they play in the shipping business.
